Forest conservation areas

A protected forest is a forest area that is safeguarded against clearing, excessive logging, livestock grazing, and similar activities. On protected forest land, forest cover must generally be maintained at all times, although in some cases up to 10% of the area may be used as open natural space where limited grazing by animals is permitted. In return for establishing a protected forest, the public authorities may grant you a financial benefit. However, strict rules apply to the landowner’s actual rights of use, and it is easy to make mistakes if you are not familiar with the regulations. The consequences can be costly, for example in the form of mandatory reforestation or fines.
If you wish to establish a protected forest or are considering purchasing a property registered as protected forest in the land register, you must be aware of the strict limitations on how you may use the land. KROMANN Law Firm’s lawyers are ready to advise you on the advantages and disadvantages of protected forest status, and we also assist with guidance if you wish to move or remove a protected forest designation. We can also help you communicate with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen), which is the supervisory authority, and advise you if you are considering purchasing a property with protected forest status.
