Police Interview

Are you to be interviewed by the police? Then you need a strong lawyer

We always recommend that you speak with a lawyer before attending a police interview. Whether you are to be interviewed as a suspect or as the injured party (victim) in a criminal case, the interview can have a major impact on the further course of the case.

At KROMANN Law Firm, you receive qualified legal advice before, during, and after the police interview:

  • If you are a suspect, you have the right not to make a statement, and we advise you on how best to protect your interests.

  • If you are the injured party (victim), we help you be heard and understood – and ensure that your rights as a victim are respected throughout the entire process.

We ensure that you attend well prepared and have strong legal support by your side, so you do not stand alone in a situation that may be both unsettling and decisive for the case.

What does a lawyer cost in a criminal case?

A victim’s counsel is free of charge for you as the victim. The state covers the lawyer’s fee, regardless of whether the case ends up in court or not. This means you do not have to worry about the financial costs related to your legal assistance.

The costs of a defence lawyer can vary from case to case. When you are assigned a court-appointed defence lawyer, the fee is paid by the state if you do not have the financial means to pay it yourself. This applies whether you choose the appointed lawyer or a private lawyer under the applicable conditions.

If you are convicted, you will normally have to pay the lawyer’s fee as part of the case costs.

The court sets the fee according to fixed rates, meaning the cost is independent of which lawyer you have chosen.

If you are acquitted, the state covers the lawyer’s fee.

Get an experienced lawyer by your side during police questioning

At KROMANN Law Firm, you will be assisted by one of the country’s most experienced defence lawyers with many years of practice in all types of criminal cases – from minor offences to serious crime. We ensure that your rights are protected from the very first contact with the police and throughout the entire criminal proceedings.

Your lawyer will assist you, among other things, with:

  • advice before and during police interviews,

  • review and assessment of the case materials,

  • strategic planning of your defence, and

  • guidance on how to deal with the question of guilt.

A central part of the police investigation is the questioning of the suspect. What you say to the police is recorded in reports, which may have significant importance for the further course of the case. These reports are used both during the investigation and as evidence in court.

It is important to know that you are not obliged to make a statement to the police. It is voluntary whether you wish to give a statement – and we always recommend that you speak with a defence lawyer first, so you are best equipped to make the right decision.

Where does the interview take place?

If you are charged, the police will interview you. The police interview will normally take place at the local police station. This is especially the case if the interview is expected to take a longer time.

The interview may also take place at the scene of the offence or at the location where the police contact you. In some cases, the interview is conducted by telephone.

How does a police interview take place?

Before you are interviewed, the police must inform you of the charge and that you are not obliged to make a statement.

Your defence lawyer has the right to be present during the interview if you wish, and the defence lawyer is entitled to ask you supplementary questions during the interview. It is always a very good idea to have a defence lawyer present during the interview.

The police will record your statement in an interview report, which you will have the opportunity to read through and sign if you agree with its contents. You are not obliged to read or sign the interview report. If you have additions or corrections to what the police have written down, these must also be included in the report.

Unless you are under arrest, it is voluntary whether you go to the police station to be interviewed. If you are arrested, an interview will usually take place at the police station if you choose to give a statement.

Interviewing children and young people

If you are under 18 years old, as a general rule – in addition to a lawyer – a representative from your municipality must also be present. In some cases, your parents may also be present during the interview.

During the interview, the representative must support you and ensure that the interview is conducted as gently as possible. The representative must remain neutral during the interview and may not actively participate in the questioning.

The importance of a lawyer during a police interview

Having a lawyer present during a police interview can make a significant difference. A lawyer can ensure that your rights are respected and that you do not say anything that may harm your case. KROMANN Law Firm can help you navigate the legal system and provide you with the support you need.

We can, among other things, assist with:

  • reviewing the record and ensuring that it is accurate and truthful,

  • advising you on your rights, ensuring you understand them and how to exercise them,

  • preparing you for the interview by going through the case with you and preparing your answers,

  • being present during the interview and ensuring that it is conducted properly and fairly.
