Voluntary adoption relinquishment

If you are pregnant or have a child that you do not wish to keep, you may choose to place the child for adoption.

When you choose to place your child for adoption, the adoption will most often be anonymous. You will therefore not have access to information about the child’s adoptive parents or other details about the child. However, you may express certain wishes regarding the child’s family and environment, which the Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset) will try to respect as far as possible.

Even if you choose adoption, fatherhoodmust still be established. You are therefore required to provide information about who is or may be the father of the child.

The child’s father must consent to the adoption if there is joint custody. If he does not have custody, he may instead submit a statement objecting to the adoption.

You can give your final consent to adoption no earlier than three months after the child’s birth. Until final consent is given, you may withdraw your decision.
